Monte GoldsteinMonte Jay Goldstein, M.D.

Monte Jay Goldstein, M.D began his medical career as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Medical Center. As his medical knowledge grew, he became intrigued with the “magic” of anesthesia and switched specialties mid-stream, completing his training at NYU/Bellevue. During that period, he received fellowship training in both cardiac and obstetrical anesthesia.

In 1991, Dr. Goldstein joined the anesthesia department at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern N.Y. where he served as chief of obstetric anesthesia. During his tenure, he spearheaded the transition to a new maternal child healthcare delivery model. He headed the team that designed a Labor and Delivery unit and supervised both the construction and medical staff integration onto the newly constructed floor.

Dr. Goldstein began developing new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia in the late 90’s. He was an early advocate for ambulatory surgical care. In 2003, Dr. Goldstein realized that a large portion of ambulatory surgical cases would be moving from the hospital to the outpatient/ASC/office setting. He formulated a plan and organized a group of surgeons to develop, build, and bring to accreditation and licensure, a 3 room multispecialty ASC, The Ramapo Valley Surgical Center, which opened in 2005. Dr. Goldstein has served as medical director of the facility since its inception. Also in 2004, Dr. Goldstein assisted a plastic/cosmetic surgeon in the development of a state-of-the-art single room single specialty ASC in Paramus NJ, dedicated to the highest standards of ambulatory surgical care for plastic/cosmetic surgery patients.

In conjunction with the above activities, Dr, Goldstein was managing member and anesthesia chief of two anesthesia companies, one dedicated to ASC care (Jandee Anesthesiology) and another responsible for office-based anesthesia services. In this role, Dr. Goldstein became a leading advocate for patient safety in the ambulatory setting.

With a passion for patient safety, Dr. Goldstein became an ambulatory surgical center surveyor for American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (QUADA), one of the major national/international accrediting bodies, in 2009. He has become a true expert in the accreditation/regulatory arena. He currently serves on the education committee of QUADA and one of the national educators, teaching the surveyor training course and is the “go to” educator when problems arise for surveyors out in the field.

Dr. Goldstein is a member of the executive board of QUADA and serves on the standards committee. In this role he assists in developing the international standards that require full compliance by the ASC community. He co-authored the first national standards ever developed and enacted for pediatric dental office certification, which became effective in 2019.

Dr. Goldstein has chaired the QUADA investigative committee since 2017. In that role he determines which accredited/certified ASC’s require additional inspection activates, analyzes the results, and determines whether corrective action on accreditation/certification standards are required.

Dr. Goldstein continues to perform certification inspections as a surveyor, leading teams of physicians and nurses through accreditation surveys nationally.

Virtua Health, a New Jersey health system, became a joint venture partner with Ramapo Valley Surgical Center in 2012. Dr. Goldstein recognized the alignment of values between his anesthesia group, RVSC, and Virtua Health early during the transition. He was an original advocate for a “shared operations” functional cohesion of all the Virtua Joint Venture ASC’s (six at the time), perhaps foreshadowing his current role. He assisted in assembling the first Virtua ASC retreat and as the joint venture team has developed and grown, has become a highly integrated member of the operation team. His role has increased as the organization has grown, becoming the corporate expert on ASC policy, accreditation, and certification issues.

Dr. Goldstein was appointed Chief Medical Officer for the Virtua Health Joint Ventures in May of 2021. He currently oversees medical, regulatory, and operational activities of 41 ambulatory surgical centers as well as development of new joint venture activities. He continues to pursue his passion for advancing patient safety in the ambulatory setting while advocating for the continued growth of the ASC industry, and Virtua Health specifically.

In 2019, Dr. Goldstein joined the medical advisory board of Orbis International. This role marries the various aspects of Dr. Goldstein Career. Orbis is dedicated to fighting blindness throughout the world. His role is to advise integration of various systems surrounding patient safety peri-operatively in the third world and on The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital: A state-of-the-art teaching facility complete with operating room, classroom, and recovery room.
